How to start the engine of the Education For Skills

The development of daily life skills in students requires the cooperation of educational institutions, parents and teachers.

The basic tenet of the ecological model proposed by Bronfenbrenner argues that human development involves the progressive mutual accommodation between an active human being, which is under development on the one hand, and on the other changing properties in the immediate surroundings developing that person lives.

In the knowledge society, changes occur continuously at high speed so that the old model of learning based on a qualification that enables the individual to perform an occupation becomes obsolete, giving way to a system of lifelong learning skills equip the students enabling them to participate actively in society and access to employment at any time in their lives.

What is meant by competence

In education, competition means the "set of social behaviors, affective and cognitive skills, psychological, sensory and motor functions that allow it to perform properly a profession."

The main objective of learning is to get the skills students learn in a holistic manner so that:

1. Recognize the value of learning that builds.

2. Recognize the processes through which such construction has been done (metacognition).

3. Is recognized as the person who has built each of the learning.

This will get the development of meaningful and lasting learning in students that can be used by it at any time during her student life, work or social.

The attitude of teachers with basic skills

According to Stenhouse, "For a teacher, the adoption of a new curriculum is as difficult as making a strict diet." This means that the shift to competency-based educational model will present many challenges to teachers and especially teachers who base their methods expository learning

focused on the teacher. Therefore, the training will be key to successful transition to teaching skills-based learning.

Teachers as members of society are also required to form a permanent and more in the current situation in which students, digital natives, they dominate much better educational technologies.

Perrenoud said that teachers should develop a set of competences in order to facilitate the development of basic skills in students, such as:

* Organize and manage learning situations.

* Manage the progression of learning.

* Involve students in their learning and their work.

* Work as a team.

* Use new information and communication.

* Addressing the ethical problems of the profession.

* Manage your own training.

* Use effective communication.

The role of the family

Core competencies are achieved not only in school, the family plays an important role in learning from them.

Each family can assist in the development of skills in their children through two actions: actively participating in the school and incorporating family dynamics-learning educational skills. In this regard, the Spanish Confederation of Parents has developed a family calendar to work on a daily task based on core competencies.

Clearly the issue of competency will mean a revolution in the education of those countries involved and so that it can materialize into a tangible reality requires a change of mentality that goes beyond education policy. It will be necessary for a joint work of educational institutions, parents and teachers to get students today acquire the basic skills needed to participate actively in the changing society of tomorrow.
